Have you ever been told, “It’s not what you know; it's who you know?” This statement rings true in almost every industry, and networking with professionals can open doors you never thought possible. In today’s competitive job market, networking has become more critical than ever, and it can help you gain valuable insights, learn about job openings, and even secure job interviews. This blog post will discuss how networking with professionals can elevate you in ways you can’t even imagine.

The power of networking

Networking with professionals can be intimidating, but stepping out of your comfort zone is worth it; most people think so. According to a LinkedIn survey, 70% of people in 2016 were hired at a company where they had a connection. That’s right, the majority of people were able to secure a job because they knew someone within the company. Moreover, networking can help you learn more about an industry or company. You could gain valuable insights on what skills are in demand, what the culture is like, and what the job entails. Additionally, networking can help you build relationships with people who can be your mentors or advocates. These relationships could provide guidance, support, and even job recommendations.

One example of the power of networking comes from my friend, Sarah. She had difficulty finding a job in her field but was determined to make it work. She attended networking; Sarah might have known about the job opening. It was a networking event, and she met someone who worked at a company she was interested in. They exchanged contact information and kept in touch. A few weeks later, Sarah saw a job posting for the company and knew she had to apply. She reached out to her new contact, who was able to provide her with more information about the job and even put in a good word for her. Sarah landed an interview and ultimately got the job. With networking, Sarah might have known about the job opening and secured a discussion.

Another example of the power of networking comes from my own experience. In college, I attended a conference where I met a woman who worked in the field I was interested in. We exchanged contact information, and I contacted her a few weeks later to ask her more about her job. She was kind enough to meet with me, and we had a great conversation. A few months later, I applied for a job at her company and listed her as a reference. She provided a glowing recommendation, and I got the job. I might have had the opportunity to work at my dream company if I had networked.

How to network effectively

Now that we understand the power of networking, let’s discuss how to network effectively. First, it’s essential to identify your goals. What do you hope to gain from networking? Are you looking for a job? Do you want to learn more about an industry? Do you want to build relationships with mentors or advocates? Once you’ve identified your goals, you can focus your networking efforts on the right people and events.

Second, it’s essential to be genuine and authentic. Don’t approach networking as a transactional relationship. People can sense when you’re only interested in what they can do for you. Instead, approach networking as an opportunity to build genuine connections with people who share your interests. Be curious about their experiences and listen actively. You never know what you might learn or who can help you.

Third, it’s essential to follow up. After meeting someone at a networking event or having a conversation with a professional, follow up with them. Send them a LinkedIn message or email thanking them for their time. You could even suggest coffee or lunch to continue the conversation. Following up shows that you value the relationship and are willing to try to maintain it.

Overcoming networking obstacles

Networking can be intimidating, especially if you’re not outgoing or confident. However, there are ways to overcome these obstacles. First, practice makes perfect. The more you network, the more comfortable you’ll become. Start small by attending a networking event with a friend or colleague. You could even practice your elevator pitch beforehand to build your confidence.

Second, remember that networking is a two-way street, and you have something valuable to offer. Don’t be afraid to share your experiences, insights, and skills with others. You never know who might be looking for someone with your expertise.

Third, don’t give up after one bad experience. Not every networking event or conversation will lead to a job or connection, and that’s okay. Keep trying; eventually, you’ll find the right people and opportunities.

Conclusion

Networking with professionals can be a game-changer in your career. It can help you gain valuable insights, build relationships with mentors or advocates, and even secure job interviews. Remember, networking is a two-way street, and it’s essential to approach it with authenticity and a genuine interest in others. Overcoming obstacles like shyness or a lack of confidence takes practice, but the rewards are worth it. So, get out there and start networking!
